ISO 9001:2026 Transition Guide for Australian Businesses
By Jack Yumulu, ISO consultant and founder of UMISUS
ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. If your business is certified to ISO 9001:2015, you have until 30 September 2029 to move across. Existing certificates can remain valid during the transition, subject to their expiry dates and ongoing certification requirements. Here is what has changed, what has not, and a practical way to get there without rewriting your whole system.
The short version
Published: 16 September 2026.
Transition deadline: 30 September 2029, as set out in ISO/TC 176 transition guidance. After that date, ISO 9001:2015 certificates expire or are withdrawn.
Your 2015 certificate: can remain valid during the transition period, subject to its expiry date and ongoing certification requirements.
How big is the change? Evolutionary, not a rewrite. The core ideas stay the same: process approach, customer focus, leadership, risk based thinking and continual improvement.
What has changed
Certification Bodies that have published summaries of the new version point to these main changes:
Quality culture and ethical behaviour: leadership is now expected to actively promote a culture of quality and ethical conduct, and staff awareness covers this too.
Risks and opportunities are separated: instead of one combined requirement, you now determine and address risks and opportunities as two distinct things.
Stronger change management: planned changes to your quality management system need more structured control.
Clearer terms: a small set of core quality management terms now sits inside the standard itself.
Expanded guidance: the annex at the back has more explanation of intent and structure. It is guidance, not new obligations.
Some Certification Bodies also highlight stronger links between the quality system and business strategy, recognition of remote and hybrid working, and attention to digital tools and climate related issues in your business context.
What has not changed
If your ISO 9001:2015 system works and is genuinely used, most of it carries straight across. Your processes, records, internal audits, management reviews and corrective actions remain the backbone. This is an update to an existing system, not a new project.
A practical transition plan for Australian businesses
Talk to your Certification Body early. Ask when they can schedule your transition audit, and whether it can be combined with your next surveillance or recertification visit. Audit capacity gets tight in the final year, so do not leave it to 2029.
Run a gap assessment. Compare your current system against the 2026 requirements, focusing on the changes above. Most small businesses will find a handful of gaps, not dozens.
Update only what needs updating. Typical updates are your risk and opportunity register, your change control process, and how leadership demonstrates quality culture and ethics. Resist the urge to rewrite documents that already work.
Brief your team. A short awareness session on what changed and why is usually enough.
Test it with an internal audit. Audit against the 2026 version before your Certification Body does, then hold a management review that covers the transition.
Complete your transition audit. Your Certification Body confirms you meet ISO 9001:2026 and reissues your certificate.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to transition straight away?
No. Your existing certificate can remain valid during the transition, but you must maintain certification and check its expiry date with your certification body. Starting early simply spreads the work out and avoids the rush in 2029.
Will a tender asking for ISO 9001:2015 still accept my certificate?
During the transition period, a valid ISO 9001:2015 certificate remains a valid certificate. Many Australian tender documents still name older versions of the standard, so check the wording and ask the buyer if it is unclear.
I am about to start ISO 9001 for the first time. Which version should I use?
Ask your Certification Body which version they will certify you against. Building your system to the 2026 version now avoids a second round of changes later.
Can the transition be done remotely?
Yes. The gap assessment, document updates, training and internal audit can all be done online. Your Certification Body confirms the format of the transition audit itself.
