ISO 9001 vs ISO 27001: Which Does Your Business Need?

By Jack Yumulu, ISO consultant and founder of UMISUS

The short answer: ISO 9001 certification demonstrates that you have a quality management system. ISO 27001 certification demonstrates that you have an information security management system. Which one you need usually depends on who is asking.

ISO 9001 at a glance

  • What it covers: quality management, meaning how you deliver products and services consistently.

  • Who usually asks for it: manufacturing, construction, engineering and government supply chains.

  • Core outputs: defined processes, customer feedback, supplier control and continual improvement.

  • Controls list: none prescribed.

  • Certification cycle: three years, with annual surveillance audits.

ISO 27001 at a glance

  • What it covers: information security management, meaning how you protect confidential and sensitive information.

  • Who usually asks for it: enterprise clients, government buyers and anyone sending you security questionnaires.

  • Core outputs: risk assessment, risk treatment plan, Statement of Applicability and security controls.

  • Controls list: 93 reference controls in the 2022 version, grouped into organisational, people, physical and technological themes.

  • Certification cycle: three years, with annual surveillance audits.

When ISO 9001 is the right starting point

You make or deliver something, and a client or tender wants evidence that you do it consistently. Manufacturers, construction suppliers and service businesses in government supply chains are the most common examples.

When ISO 27001 is the right starting point

You handle client data, build software, or host systems your clients depend on. If enterprise prospects send you security questionnaires, check whether they require certification or evidence of specific controls. SaaS, fintech and data businesses fall into this group.

Can you do both?

Yes. Both standards share the same high level structure, so management review, internal audit, document control and corrective action can run as one system. Many businesses certify to one first, then add the second with far less effort.

How to decide

  1. Check what your client or tender actually requires. Ask them if it is unclear.

  2. If both are mentioned, start with the one blocking revenue now.

  3. Build the first system so the second can be added later, without rewriting everything.

UMISUS offers both as a fixed fee, quoted on request. You work directly with Jack Yumulu, with practical remote delivery and a clear scope.
